What made this 2021 vintage so special and unique was the unusual combination of weather patterns. Firstly, it was a cold spring, between the end of the first week and the second week of April temperatures dropped significantly reaching -7C in the valley, which caused widespread frost. This was a major game changer for this outstanding vintage. The frost was deep set, and broke records going back 20 plus years. The summer was the second driest for 30 years. Less than 100 mm of rain fell in the combined summer months. Assisting the vines in not attracting rot and disease. Warm to hot weather continued through September helping with phenolic ripeness. Fine weather through harvest. Yields were down between 15/20%

So what about the wines? Generally harmonious, elegant, fresh, fragrant, vibrant, acidic with higher than usual alcohol levels but not shown on the palate due to the balance achieved by most winemakers. Comparing the 2021 to other renowned vintages, it has more finesse than 2015, is approachable like 2020, but will last longer. It is too early to compare 2021 with 2016 and 2010 but I have a feeling the structure of the previous vintages might prevail, time will tell.

This extraordinary vintage has produced some outstanding Brunello di Montalcino.

Not just one but TWO 100 point wines...

A unprecedented event (for me) occurred whilst I was tasting this year's vintage, which was not totally unexpected as I have been tasting barrel samples from Il Marroneto winery for several years. At the time this video was filmed, even I was not aware of my final points decision until a couple of weeks later, when I tasted and re-tasted these extraordinary wines. I take this opportunity to congratulate Alessandro and Jacopo Mori for their dedication in producing phenomenal wines.

Bright ruby red in colour. Lifted and laden aromatic profile, consisting of dark blue florals, pale rose petal, Morello cherry, plum, blackcurrant, blueberry and blood orange. Assertive in structure on the palate, tightly wound. Sweet tannins vie with wry acidity. Phenomenal presence. Complex. Layered and linear. Rich in textural resonance. On the back end intense and yet elegant. Balanced within a micron. Epic on the close. An undeniable classic!

After considerable aeration a warm scent rises from the glass, consisting of exotic spices, including clove and cinnamon, black cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, plum and citrus peel. On the palate it opens up, grasps hold and never releases its grip.Tannins made from the finest silk thread. A new level of acidic sweetness and versatility, ensuring precision and longevity. New levels of harmony and balance. A wine of such perfection, no mortal hand at play here, but surely the intervention of the wine Gods.

Smooth, soft entry, almost Burgundian with pronounced acidic edge. Linear. Persistent. Toasted aftertaste. Long and gentle finish.

On the palate the wine just tip toes across, slowly opening up, then the full extent of the textural depth and volume takes hold, with a progression of layered quality. Powerful and savoury. Has only just started to show its character. Sensational tingling on the palate as it passes through. Mesmerising and agile on the finish.

Delicate aromas that need aeration to coax them from their slumber; rose petal, violet, bluebell and lavender florals, clove, mint, sweet liquorice and dark exotic spice. Dark wild berries, vanilla, dark chocolate, espresso aromas alongside spicy orange peel. On entry lightly textured. Shy character. So delicate and refined. Velvety tannins. Friendly acidity. Slow but gracious progression on the palate to a long conclusion.

On the finish the ripe fruit core takes centre stage, typical of this wine.

A touch flamboyant. Ample and generous. Vivid but friendly acidity vies with fresh crunchy tannins. Plenty of verve. Long and broad on the finish.

On the palate all is quiet and restrained. A touch of tannin tension brings out a dry mouthfeel sensation. Lack of fruit nuances on the nose or the palate detracts from the enjoyment.
