Chianti Classico Collection 2026 (Part 1: A - L)

As always, my Chianti Classico Collection review tries to focus on the very latest Chianti Classico releases. This year particular attention was on the 2023 vintage.

Recently, I was privileged to interview the President of the Consorzio Vino Chianti Classico, Giovanni Manetti, to discuss the ongoing developments and changes of this denomination.

Firstly, let us remind ourselves of the weather highlights for 2023 and what we should expect in the bottle. The winter was initially mild, then February and March were colder and drier that the norm. Spring remained cool and rainy from late April to the second week of June, which assisted the leaf canopy to fully develop. The summer was hot and dry but thankfully without heat spikes; cooler in the evenings with a little rainfall at the end of August, which helped greatly. Perfect harvest weather conditions prevailed through to October and Autumn allowing the full ripening of the bunches to take place.

Generally I found the wines to be compact, intense and lively: forward red fruits and lifted spice notes. Tannins were fresh, rounded and youthful, in most cases bottle age will be required to soften and extend the approachability. A challenging vintage but the winemakers rose to this challenge and produced high quality wines. Balanced and persistent.

Let us not forget that a large proportion of Italy was hit by a Peronospora attack, in some areas it spread to epic proportions. Therefore yields were down, and in some instances very low.

Peronospora, more commonly known as downy mildew, is a serious fungal disease caused by Plasmopara Viticola that appears as yellowish ‘oil spots’ on the top of vine leaves and a white, fuzzy mould on the underside. It thrives in humid, rainy conditions during the growing season, and can cause significant damage, leading to leaf fall, drying on the grapes and major yield loss.

Pale ruby red in colour. Lifted open bouquet of violet, bluebell and white florals, red rose petal, cherry and dark forest berries, balsam, liquorice and orange peel. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, pomegranate, raspberry, blonde tobacco, floral earth and mild spice. Silky on entry, lightly textured, saturates the palate, lively, linear, just pulses energy, fine grained tannins. Balanced and youthful. Mellow finish.

Pale pink in colour with ruby red undertones. Aromatics that are concentrated, consisting of blackberry, blackcurrant, prune, plum and loganberry, warm liquorice, grilled herbs, mint and blood orange. Found on the palate black berry fruits, balsamic notes, Mocha, mild sweet spice, black tea and oaky vanilla. Silky on the palate, broad, juicy and agile, showing mineral and saline energy. Fresh deep tannins. Midweight. Lengthy finish.

Medium ruby red in colour. Heady florals of violet, lilac and lavender. Essence of citrus, red cherry, cranberry, redcurrant, orange peel, exotic spice and distant eucalyptus. Tart cherry, red berries from the forest, sweet pipe tobacco, dried sage, vanilla, salty liquorice and damp cigar box. Very open on the palate, exceptionally translucent, yet racy and vibrant. Leaves a tingling sensation on the mid palate. Extremely fresh and supple. Well integrated acidic and tannin engagement. Long mellow finish.

Pale garnet red in colour. Needs plenty of aeration. Mild aromas of red blossom florals, sour cherry, redcurrant, dark spice notes, graphite and damp forest floor. Morello cherry, candied bitter orange peel, salty liquorice, floral earth, tobacco and new leather nuances.Taut and lean upon entry, bitter citrus notes, zingy acidity, good tannin structure. Overall a touch austere.

Deep aromas of crushed black fruits, white smoke, redcurrant, Mocha, complex mineral notes, worn saddle leather and orange peel. Blackberry, blackcurrant, pomegranate, fennel pollen, French mint, clove, mellow balsam notes and incense. Cool on entry, full bodied with zesty acidic character. Lively. Tannic bite detracts on the back end. Medium length on the close.

Pale ruby red in colour with pink reflections. Subtle aromas of red forest fruits, rose petal, dried sage, cedar and mint notes, orange peel and graphite. Blackberry, blackcurrant, dewberry, eucalyptus, sweet tobacco leaf, salty liquorice and white smoke. Cool entry, lightly textured, agile and juicy, lively, linear and a touch racy. Savoury. Pleasant progression with fine tannins and wry acidity. Leaves a fresh, clean mouthfeel.

Heady aromatics of prune, fig and date, cherry soaked in spirit, white smoke, clove and menthol notes, cedar and bitter herb nuances, violet and  bluebell florals. Red cherry, Boysenberry, plum, a pinch of white pepper, sweet tobacco and salty liquorice. Warm entry, great balance and delivery, inviting and appealing. Lightly textured. Integrated tannins. Pulsates with zesty energy from mid palate to the long close.

Pale pink in colour. Sweet heady  aromas rise from the glass, cherry, redcurrant, pink grapefruit, rose petals, warm liquorice, grilled rosemary and baked plum. Morello cherry, pomegranate, sweet tobacco, dark smoky spice notes, dried Mediterranean herbs and sweet clove. Youthful and lean on the palate, bottle age will add weight and character. Nicely balanced. Great energy. Linear. Juicy and vibrant. Very long finish. Huge potential.

Medium ruby red in colour. Concentrated aromas of black and red fruits, sweet tobacco notes, salty liquorice, smoke, Mocha, fennel pollen and orange blossom. Blackberry, plum, white mulberry, orange peel, distant rhubarb and a whiff of cocoa. Silky and cool upon entry, fresh and zesty acidity drives the engagement. Velvety tannins, mineral notes also add vigour. Linear and Persistent. Broad and long on the close.

Black cherry, cranberry, loganberry, oaky vanilla, blood orange, floral earth, distant cedar and mint notes, dark chocolate and tree bark. Smooth entry, lightly textured, agile with great length. Juicy. A spicy, sultry and berry character. Linear. Edgy and youthful. Medium length on the close.

Medium ruby red in colour. Deep aromatic profile, violet, lilac and lavender florals florals, dark forest berry fruits, damp forest floor, mild spice notes, oaky vanilla and mellow sweet tobacco leaf. Blackcurrant, damson, dark plum, blackberry jam, cedar and mint, blood orange, fennel pollen, Kirsch and distant balsamic nuances. Silky and ethereal on the palate, almost weightless. Poised and polished all the same!  With air intake the mid palate reveals the imprint…refined and glorious.

Medium ruby red in colour. Aromas of red flowers, red fruits, mild spice, incense, floral underbrush and mild balsamic notes. Red cherry, redcurrant, raspberry, blood orange, cedar and mint notes. Fresh and agile on the sip, showing good tension. Tannins have a bitter spike. Acidity is vivid and focussed. Medium length on the finish.

Perfectly streamlined by acidity and tannins. Poised. Linear. Seductive on the long articulated finish.

Tannins have dissolved into the wine, leaving only acidity and layered minerality to sustain the vibe. So graceful and subtle. Mellow and long on the close.

Then just as it passes mid palate opens up revealing a solid core of ripe fruits that are simply exquisite. All the elements have come together. Great energy on the close.

Intense ruby red in colour. Dark blue and purple florals, black fruits, dark exotic spice, saddle leather, blood orange, white pepper and smoky woodland scents. Blackcurrant, blackberry, black date, dark cherry, distant eucalyptus, dark chocolate and vanilla. On the sip, agile with great length, juicy, zesty acidity casts a long shadow, tannins are rounded and deep. Showing extremely well for a difficult vintage.Vibrates with energy around a core of ripe dark fruit. Impressive.

Wild cherry, dried strawberry, blackcurrant, dark plum, mint and bitter herbs. Cool entry, juicy and vibrant. Tons of energy. Silky tannins encircle fresh fruit. Savoury and earthy. Deep textural resonance. Persistent. Vivid but friendly acidity underpins all the action.

Pale ruby red in colour. Delicate aromas of red berry fruits, floral earth, bitter orange peel, sweet toasted tobacco, mild dark spice and French mint. Sour cherry, plum, blackcurrant, cooked rhubarb, liquorice, vanilla and star anise. As expected; fresh, vibrant, tart and juicy on the palate. All the sharp contours will round off given bottle age, all because of fruit quality and balance.The tannins will loose their harshness. The acidity is spot on. I also expect the dryness on the back end to lessen.

Pale purple in colour. Fresh minty aromas rise from the glass, followed by dark berry fruit, spearmint, candied orange peel, blonde tobacco, clove and a medley of crushed cherries. Bing cherry, Kirsch, vanilla, dark plum, peach and decadent aromas, fresh mushroom and black tea. On the palate, tight and yet polished. Close knit tannins vie with spiky acidity. Deceptively charming. Freshness on the back end is tangible.

Medium ruby red in colour with purple undertone. Fine, delicate aromas of cherry, rose petal, dark forest fruits, liquorice, grilled herbs, roast meat and mild tobacco leaf. Rainier cherry, redcurrant, blackberry, damson, oriental tree bark aromas and crystallised mint. Needs plenty of aeration to reveal its inner secrets, slightly reticent on the palate, it’s all there behind veils.Tense, layered, balanced, chewy and mineral notes is all I can witness. Bottle age required.

Medium ruby red in colour. Aromas of violet, hyacinth, gardenia, dark berry fruits, vanilla, cooked rhubarb, cake spice and mild pipe tobacco. Blackberry, blackcurrant, damson, warm liquorice, citrus zest, cedar notes and damp floral earth. Vibrant and appealing upon entry. Balanced. Linear. Showing youthful intensity. Oak integrated. Muscular and yet agile and supple. Stamps its authority on the mid palate. Ripe fruit core at its heart. Long and broad on the close. Not 2021 but really attractive.

Medium ruby red in colour. Aromas of red blossom florals, red and dark berry fruits, essence of citrus, tobacco, dark spice and layered mineral notes. Black cherry, dewberry, dark plum, blackcurrant, salty liquorice, dried herb nuances, distant pomegranate and vanilla. Cool entry, citrusy in character, refreshing acidity, spiky tannins, seamless and unwavering. Tapers slightly on the back end showing a line of tension. Needs plenty of cellar time.

Deep ruby red in colour. Rich, deep and spicy on the nose. All things dark: fruit, florals and associated nuances. Blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, black plum and cherry, toasted tobacco, liquorice, concentrated balsamic notes, asphalt, tar and tanned leather. Rich sculpted body, a touch over extracted. Solid core of tannin and mineral complexity, holds the structure, which tends to overshadow all else on the back end.

Very precise and refined on the palate, just tip toes across, almost weightless, and yet leaves behind a beguiling imprint. Outstanding fruit quality. Delivers beautifully.

Pale purple in colour. Aromas that have an ethereal quality, cherry, rose petal, a puff of smoke, and crushed terracotta amongst them. Dark cherry, blackcurrant, cooked rhubarb and mint. Taut and youthful on the sip, zesty acidity and fresh crunchy tannins in evidence. Ripe fruit interplays with all nuances from start to finish. Shows great promise.

oaky vanilla, cherry and citrus peel. Bing cherry, wild strawberry, dark plum, white smoke and mild spice. Fresh and intense on the palate. Extremely long and flavourful. So precise with fresh tannins and vivid acidity. Chalk and oyster shell undertone. Outstanding fruit quality. Opulent and sophisticated on the long finish.

Cherry, blackberry, oaky vanilla and dried herbs. Cool entry, agile and juicy. Paints the palate with a light stroke. Light in textural resonance. Almost weightless. The fresh vibrant acidity takes the engagement out of the shadows. Medium length on the close.

Expands slightly from mid palate showing more flavours and nuances. Impressive from a difficult vintage.

Medium garnet red in colour. Heady and deep aromas of warm crushed black berry fruits, dark chocolate, cherry, clove, pipe tobacco and oaky vanilla. Blackberry, blackcurrant, plum, dark cherry, cedar and mint notes, white smoke and slate. Silky entry, very deep textural resonance, so rich and plump, exquisite black berry fruit take all the plaudits at the centre of the stage.The back end is full of classic sweet accents. Long on the finish. I was impressed with the 2019 Riserva, but this is another level.

Silky entry, takes it time to open up showing rich textures in harmony and balance. Dense and sumptuous. Freshness hand in glove with energy. Caressing tannins and vivid acidity. Beguiling on the long finish.

N.B. It needs to be mentioned that Le Cinciole was hit by severe hail storm in August 2022. The owners used the best of their fruit left for this single wine.
