Super Tuscan Wines: Toscana I.G.T. 2026

Having discussed in depth the IGT’s from Tuscany in previous editions,

I thought it might be of interest that in this year's introduction I give a brief explanation of the history of viticulture in Tuscany.

The arrival of the Etruscans in the 8th century BC is a good place to start. Ancient amphora remnants originally from Tuscany for the purpose of transporting wine to southern Italy and Gaul, have been found and authenticated. Gaul is now known as France, Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg, Switzerland and northern Italy.

By the 3rd Century BC Greek writers were extolling the merits of the wines from the region we now call Tuscany.

During the Roman Empire wine was at the heart of its culture, usually diluted with water, flavoured with herbs and spices (Romans rarely drank wine straight, it was considered uncivilised).

Consumed by all social classes, the Romans spread viticulture throughout Europe.

The Romans revolutionised viticulture, they developed the screw based wine press, made popular the use of glass for storage and introduced the barrel for aging as well as transportation. They managed acidity by introducing marble dust or chalk. To speed up the aging process they baked the full barrels in smoky rooms.

Following the demise of the Roman Empire and during the Middle Ages the Church attended to winemaking. Monasteries were the main purveyors of wine in Europe and wine experimentation was carried out by Monks, who kept meticulous records. New techniques were adopted to help stabilise the wines, such as fermenting the sugars sufficiently to make the wines dryer.

The aristocracy and merchant's classes then took over from the Monasteries, introducing a share crop system referred to as Mezzadria. This system was based on the landowners providing the land for varied crops to be grown by peasant farmers. Payment for this type of tenancy was a 50/ 50 share of all produce, including fruit such as grapes. Many of the landlords would then turn the grape harvest into wine and sell the produce to merchants in Florence.

The earliest reference to Florentine wine retailers dates to 1079 AD, a guild was created in 1282. This guild; the Arte dei Vinattieri observed strict rules and guidelines on how the Florentine wine merchants could conduct their trade. No wine to be sold within 100 metres of a church, no wine to be sold to children under 15 years, or to prostitutes, ruffians and the general criminal class. It was estimated that during the height of trading in the15th and 16th centuries, 30,000 litres of wine was sold annually.

The first mention of wine from Chianti was by a Tuscan merchant: Francesco di Marco Datini (1335-1410), also known as The Merchant of Prato, who dealt in wine sales as well as other luxury goods through Europe from his palazzo in Prato. He also opened a wine taverna and a historic cantina to store the selection of wines on offer (info@museocasadatini.it).

The Greco and Vernaccia wines of San Gimignano were considered luxury items and highly regarded, even over saffron.

In 1685 the Tuscan author Francesco Redi wrote Bacco, a 980 line poem describing the wines of Tuscany.

At the end of the Napoleonic wars, Tuscany returned to the rule of the Habsburgs. It was at this time that the statesman Bettino Ricasoli inherited his family ancestral estate and castle in Brolio located in the heart of Chianti Classico area, outlined and named in the Bandol of 1716.

Ricasoli travelled throughout Europe studying grape varieties, among his many other interests, and experimented with many different varieties in Brolio. During this period he discovered that three local varieties; Sangiovese, Canaiolo and Malvasia produced a fine wine. This was adopted locally and referred to as the recipe for Chianti Classico.

In 1848, revolution broke out in Italy, the war devastated most of the Tuscan vineyards, many peasant farmers left Tuscany for other areas of Italy and even the Americas. Under the mezzadria system most of the wine produced by the share croppers was drunk by the landowners. The workers stretched their reduced supply with water labelling the drink as “ l’acqua pazza” or crazy water.

It took over a century for a new way of thinking to replace the mezzadria system. In the 1960’s landowners took charge of their own vineyard and wine production focussing more on quality over quantity.

Many of the famous cult wineries in Chianti Classico have achieved far more status from their IGT wines than the DOCG.

Delicate and elegant on the palate, just tip toes across, hardly leaving an imprint, does show soft fruity fibre. Precise and expressive in a Burgundian way. Velvety tannins interplay with mellow acidity. The close is medium in length.

Dark cherry, blackcurrant, fragrant tobacco, rosemary, cedar shavings and eucalyptus. Fresh, clean and agile on the palate. Pulses energy. Layered complex minerality. Really juicy. Mellow tannins, vivid acidity that counter balances the rich body. Needs a year or two bottle age, to flush out weight and more nuances hopefully.

Medium ruby red in colour. Aromas are delicate and consists of Morello cherry, plum, baked rhubarb, rose petal and bluebell florals, dried bitter herbs and blonde tobacco leaf. Announces itself on the palate with gusto, full of confidence, makes an immediate imprint of ripe fruits and structure, not in a forceful way, but calm and controlled format. Impressive. Deep textural resonance. Linear progression with fine tannins and friendly acidity.

Rich in concentration. Needs to be consumed.

Deep purple in colour. Concentrated aromas of blackcurrant jam, blackberry, dark chocolate, spice and pepper, dark cherry, liquorice, a whiff of espresso, savoury, earthy, woodland scents and balsamic notes. Silky and juicy upon entry, lively, central core of ripe black fruit, surrounded by melting tannins and wry acidity. Thin line of minerality under scores the entire event. Rich and decadent. Broad and long on the finish. Petit Verdot is nearly always the condiment, rarely the main course!

Vivid acidity keeps rich body in check. Wild and savoury.

On the entry, taut, slightly angular, juicy, agile with a tendency to dry the palate. Linear. Good length on the finish.

The palate is rich, balanced and refined, a thin line of minerality engages on the long finish.

Pale ruby red in colour. Subtle aromas of red and dark forest berries, mild tobacco leaf, white smoke, crushed rock and stone, orange peel and very mild spice notes. Dark cherry, blackberry, plum, cedar and mint nuances, new leather and a whiff of lavender. Cool entry, compact and linear, showing energy via a ripe fruit core. Surprisingly little or no serious spice notes, as the richness of the fruit quality with friendly tannins and poignant acidity commands all on the palate.

Deep ruby red in colour with purple outer rim. On the nose a mix of sweet scented spice notes, candied bitter orange peel, dark berry fruits, sweet tobacco, grilled herbs, cedar bark and a whiff of roasted coffee beans. Dark cherry, pomegranate, loganberry, salty liquorice, violet and lavender fragrances. Cool and smooth upon entry, saturates the palate. Light textural tone, does not carry much weight, yet makes an imprint on the palate. Long, agile and juicy on the finish.

On the palate: the imbiber is totally captivated firstly by the textural tones, followed by the complexity and weight. Utterly beguiling. Balanced to within a micron. Bright and juicy on the long, articulated finish. Wow!

Medium garnet red in colour. The aromatics are restrained and yet elegant. Plum, prune, fig all play forward roles. Vanilla, dark chocolate, mild spice notes including cinnamon, fragrant tobacco leaf are all part of the chorus. Morello cherry, pomegranate, raspberry, menthol are secondary aromas. On the palate, silky, lively, full of energy, classic sweet accents appear on the mid palate. Succulent. Potent. Brooding and joyfully alive. Totally epic on the finish, Very impressive, especially when the general vintage was difficult.

On the palate: agile and appealing, balanced with fine textural notes. On the back end; fresh, tingling friendly acidity lifts the engagement. Deep tannins with steel core. Lingers on the close. Needs bottle time.

Bright pale purple in colour. Aromas of violet and bluebell florals, blueberry, slate, blonde tobacco leaf with distant menthol notes. Red cherry, redcurrant, cooked rhubarb, blood orange and mint notes. Upon entry, smooth, agile with youthful energy, balanced, elegant, refined and maybe a touch restrained. Lightly textured, almost Burgundian, leaves a fine imprint. Linear. Has an opaque clarity. Articulated and very long on the close.

Nicely balanced. With air intake a cherry character emerges. A little shy at present. Needs bottle age.
