Comparing wines from different denomination and making a list in order of preference is remarkably difficult and unnecessary...unless you are selling magazines or your website!
But in true wine critic tradition I have decided to make a list of the wines I most enjoyed in 2018.
My list is not based on price, denomination or points given…It’s based on WOW factor!
1) Castello di Monsanto Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG “Il Poggio” 1968
2) Roagna Barbaresco DOCG Crichet Pajé 2010
3) Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico DOCG Gran Selezione San Marcellino 2013
4) Monteraponi Chianti Classico DOCG Il Campitello Riserva 2016
5) Fattoria Le Pupille Saffredi 2016
6) Baricci Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2016
7) Vecchie Terre di Montefili Chianti Classico DOCG Riserva 2016
8) Gianfranco Fino Primitivo di Manduria DOC ES Riserva 2014
9) Vietti Rocche di Castiglione Barolo DOCG 2014
10) Elvio Cogno Barbera D’Alba DOC Pre-Phylloxera 2010
11) Ar.Pe.Pe Valtellina Superiore Grumello Buon Consiglio Riserva 2007
12) Cascina Ebreo Nebbiolo Torbido 2007
13) Pol Roger Champagne Rosé 2008
N.B. 13 is my favoured number!
I would like to thank all the proprietors/winemakers, enologists, enoteche, sommeliers and all my wine friends who have contributed to making my first full year in Italy a truly unbelievable and totally unforgettable experience.
