Further to my brief mention of Pieve wine last year, I have obtained more details of changes
occurring in the denomination of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, and in particular this new classification.

In February 2025 the Ministry of Agriculture officially recognised the approval of an amendment to the product traded as Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, with PDO status ( Protected Designation of Origin).
The announcement was published in May 2025. These amendments introduce significant new rules in the production and labelling of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, with the purpose of greater transparency and enhancement of perception and value.
The single most noticeable change is the introduction of the term ‘ Pieve’ (Parish) on wine labels, which have 12 newly recognised additional geographical sub zones within the Montepulciano region.
These sub zones are found in historical parishes some dating back to the Roman era.
The purpose of Pieve is intended to highlight the special characteristics of grapes from
these small unique zones and cannot be combined with the Riserva description. The rules covering Pieve production includes at least 85% of the grapes must be Sangiovese with the remaining being made up from other local varieties such as: Canaiolo Nero, Ciliegiolo, Mammolo Nero and up to 5% of Colorino Nero. The vines of the classification must be at least 15 years old. The alcohol strength must be a minimum of 13%.
The maturation (ageing) period is a minimum of three years, including at least one year In barrel and one year in bottle.
Checks and traceability concerning authenticity will be vigorously enforced, and this wine will need to be handled separately from Riserva wine.
Only vineyards within the twelve designated sub zones may produce this wine.
Other factors that come into play are Increase acidity content, sugar free extract increase and a reduction in yield limits are the other factors that come into play. The grapes used for blending must come from the same designates vineyard.
I look forward tasting these new wines and reporting my findings to you. As of today, I have not yet been sent any bottles to review, although I understand 18 separate wineries will release Pieve 2021 this year.
The twelve Pieve sub zones listed are:
Ascianello
Badia
Caggiole
Cerliana
Cervognano
Gracciano
Le Gracie
San Biagio
Sant’Albino
Sant’Ilaro
Valardegna
Valiano
This trend follows other wines regions in Tuscany, most recently the Gran Selezione of Chianti Classico.
There is plenty of talk about falling wine sales globally. Mention of French Bordeaux wine lakes, as well of whispers of some Italian wine regions having difficulties in selling good past vintages.
So I looked into this potential problem with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano 2024, and found a very healthy sales balance sheet. Exports in 2024 are only one half percentage lower than the previous year at 65.5%. Germany comes out top with 37% of export share, with America (North and South), in second place with 35%. In Italy with 34.5% of total production, not surprisingly central areas account for 62% (Tuscany 42%), the north 33% of sales, the remaining going to the South of Italy.
I will endeavour to continue to investigate sales in the regions of Italy I report on.
