When a vintage with huge expectations arrives, it is nearly always guaranteed to fall below the hype. I am thrilled to announce that is NOT the case with the Brunello di Montalcino 2019 wines.
If you consider the previous two vintages 2017 and 2018 were not “show stealers,” the pre-release quality propaganda of BdM 2019 was to some degree, full of hyperbole by comparison.
The growing season in 2019 Montalcino was very equable: a wet winter, a humid early spring, warm summer months, with no peaks or troughs of temperature, During September and October, rain showers came and went without bringing hardly any concerns.
There has been plenty of discussion about which are the better placed vineyards in the denomination; North versus South, and other compass points. This argument was abandoned for the 2019 Vintage when every corner of the region produced exceptional wines.
One thing I feel is important to mention is the overall higher temperatures are giving the winemakers a new challenge: to control the alcohol strength of the wines, noticeable on the bouquet or the on palate.
Brunello di Montalcino 2019 wines show vibrancy, lifted aromatics, pulsing energy, freshness and terrific ageing potential almost across the board. However, the most important attribute was BALANCE resulting in a smoother ABV.
I am in the fortunate geographical position of living less than an hour’s drive from Montalcino, and having access to early barrel samples of new vintages coming down the line. The opportunity of monitoring the evolution of the wine year upon year until bottling, is a great advantage. I can usually ascertain my expectancy, and generally ignore the drum banging and marketing “puffery.”
Regarding the barrel tastings, an interesting thought occurred to me, one of the original rules by the Consorzio del Vino Brunello di Montalcino was NOT to release the new Brunello for 4 years following harvest and one extra year for the Riserva. This was mainly due to the harsh tannin content in Sangiovese. In Montalcino this issue has now dissolved by winemaking style and technique. Should the Consorzio consider reducing the wait time before release, these younger Brunello have become so very compelling with their youthful energy and lifted bouquet.
Of course, you could therefore end up with two vintages in the same release year: that’s not such a terrible thing to occur!
We will have to wait and see, remembering change in Italy is a very slow-moving process.
There is a tendency to compare one vintage to the other. However as we know, each vintage is totally unique. The three outstanding vintages this millennium so far are 2010, 2015 and 2016. Many have compared the present BdM 2019 to the 2015 vintage in style terms. I don’t quite go along with that, I feel the closest vintage is the 2004 BdM, often forgotten, but not by me!
Generally, the Brunello 2019 will be remembered for raising the overall quality of the wines produced, rather than a host of 100 point scores. Personally, I have never scored so many wines in the 93 to 98 points bracket! I would like to particularly applaud the following wineries:
