Just to keep you up to speed, this review is really about the 2021 vintage: some wineries bottle early, hence I would have reviewed those 2021 Chianti Classico last year. The remaining producers send their bottles this year. Just to complicate matters further, some wineries would prefer their 2021 annata to have more bottle age before releasing them. I have also reviewed wines from previous years, usually Riserva and Gran Selezione. These wines have had the benefit from bottle age, therefore are more relaxed and have evolved in character and nuances.
This year I have personally reviewed the greatest number of labels: 230 Chianti Classico DOCG and 70 Toscana IGTs, almost entirely from the Chianti Classico region.
My gratitude goes to all the wineries that have placed their trust in my ability to review their wines impartially and objectively on this very special year marking the centenary of the Chianti Classico Consorzio (1924-2024). #ChiantiClassico100
The Consorzio Chianti Classico reported the 2021 as quite a regular vintage: Spring rains allowed good vegetative growth, as well as replenishing water reserves for the summer months ahead.
The summer was dry with sporadic rain in August and, more importantly, no excessive heat waves, this resulted in heathy vines with no powdery mildew or downy mildew. Very wide temperature difference between day and night from the end of August, is another very important factor for the optimal completion of the ripening of the grape. The Sangiovese harvest started around September 20th.
On a personal note from barrel samples through to tasting from bottle, Chianti Classico 2021 vintage awakened my palate to riot, with its energy and sheer poise, purity, extraordinary olfactory and its complexity of deliverance.
There have been some fabulous vintages of Chianti Classico in recent years: 2001,4,6,8,13,15,16,19, 20 and now 2021. As I have suggested before, Chianti Classico 2019 are great wines but need bottle time; the Chianti Classico 2020 are more forward, probably due to a lower yield because of early frosts, with exceptional acidity and fruit quality…but still, I believe the 2021 vintage will reveal itself as the greatest Chianti Classico for decades.
I would like to mention a special appreciation to these wineries, which “have raised the bar” in bringing their extraordinary wines, to my attention.

Tannins show an unripe bitter taste, the outcome is a non forgiving palate, as typical of this very difficult vintage. To bottle this as a Gran Selezione is somewhat baffling.
