Amarone della Valpolicella 2025

There seems to be a tangible crossroad at present with Amarone that goes beyond the "modern" versus the "traditional" encampments in Valpolicella, or even the oak barriques or larger botti formats: The main bone of contention is "appassimento," many regions are producing fine wines at lower cost, and the market for high alcohol fruit bombs is declining.

There are varying degrees of action; from a few adjustments here and there to an “abandon ship” scenario, and leaving the historic techniques of the past… in the past.

The two leading producers of Amarone, namely, Dal Forno and Quintarelli are both under a new leader: at Dal Forno, Romani’s son Marco captains the ship, the obvious changes concerns the control of the appassimento, individual sensors and environmental control is at the heart of this futuristic drying room.

A new overlord at Quintarelli is Francesco Grigoli (the grandson of Beppe), his action includes lowering temperatures in the ‘fruttaio’ (fruit room) to slow down the drying, as a reaction to a direct result of earlier harvest times due to warmer going vintages.

Many others are changing the traditonal appassimento by shortening the time span, notably Bertani and Zýmé, with an agreed maximum shortening period to three months to allow the molecular changes to take place. Other producers have decided to extend appassimento times: Tenuta Sant’Antionio, Terre di Leone and Albino Armani included in their ranks.

Another group have decided the route to take is a lighter in texture, less weighty version of Amarone with less alcohol, less residual sugar, and less dense in colour, than produced by their forebears.

And finally, the important family owned players, Masi, Tommasi and Allegrini, these names have largely led the sales and fame of the region for past decades, they will make changes but not I suspect ’en masse’  they will each make subtle differences, which can be attributed to house style.

To sum up, I expect to see a paired back version of what has preceded, a clean, fresh, angular approach in various degrees.

One thing is for sure, change is on its way, but like most things Italian… at its own pace!

This year I have been sent some phenomenal wines to review from the Consorzio Tutela Vini Valpolicella, many great and special past vintages, and I would like to extend my profound gratitude and appreciation to those wineries, that have entrusted their wines to my palate.

Medium ruby red in colour. Concentrated aromatics of red blossom flowers, including peony and carnation. Wild forest berries, fresh garden herbs, distant sandalwood and mellow spice. Wild cherry, blackberry, pomegranate, fresh mushroom, black tea and violet floral overtone. Silky and graceful on entry. So juicy and lively. Dark chocolate notes make a brief appearance. Superb transparency. Harmonious. Slight edgy sour angular note on the close, but this does not detract from the overall pleasure.

Coats the palate, rich, juicy, plush, very ripe concentrated fruit. The acidity is vibrant and keeps the palate fresh and lively. Lingers on the close.

Thick but not aggressive tannins, wry acidity, again friendly. Great weight. Solid on the palate. No confidence issues here. Progressive to a refined conclusion.

Translucent purple/pink in colour. Aromatics of sweet scented red florals, mellow cake spice, candied orange peel, cherry liquor, distant clove and cedar shavings. Both sweet and sour accents coming off mid palate. Needs time to relax and come together.

Intense and rich ruby red in colour. Needs plenty of aeration. Lifted aromatic profile of concentrated black berry fruits, cherries soaking in spirit, crushed red rose petals, lilac and bluebell florals, liquid liquorice, warm and damp earth notes, savoury overtones and a whiff of sweet toasted tobacco. Blackcurrant, prune, dried fig, wild cherry, black berry and plum. Balsamic nuances with bitter orange peel. On the palate it’s juicy, lively, so much class, wild and savoury, standout wine. Noticeable fine classic sweet accents from start to finish just underpins the pedigree. Totally epic on the close.

On the sip: rich, juicy, agile, layered, balanced, linear, showing finesse and totally seamless.Acidity and tannins fully engaged and woven. Pulses energy. Long and broad on the finish.

Needs bottle time to relax and flush out further nuances and character.

Intense ruby red in colour with garnet red undertone and rim. On the nose: a compote of aromas including dark exotic spice, smokey sweet tobacco nuances, dark cherry, boysenberry, dried cranberry. Everything is so concentrated and linear it’s difficult to compartmentalise. Arrives on the palate in an explosive manner, announcing itself with pomp and ceremony: rich, potent, dense, vivid with textural depth and volume that defies belief. Perfectly structured tannins are woven into poignant acidity that stands alone against the rich body. Showcases of quality fruit. Elegant and super refined on the infinite conclusion. Extraordinary.
