Benvenuto Brunello 2025

Cool wines from a hot vintage: This year’s review starts with the Montalcino 2020 weather report. Generally, the winter weather was cool but never went below 0 degrees Celsius, rainfall was sufficient to top up water reserves, for the ensuing summer months, which was just as well (no pun intended) as there was very little rain through Spring and Summer

Very welcome showers at the end of August, which probably saved the harvest, alongside a dip in temperatures which slowed down the ripening stage. This is where anthocyanin compounds reach maxim concentration in the skins, and when the contribution of seed tannins to the total content of tannins (seed and skin) is weak. This longer ripening period also helps with nuances and aromatic properties. Harvest started around mid September and ended the beginning of October.

Make no mistake, this was a hot vintage. The wines I am pleased to report, do not show any signs of being overripe. The aromatic profile is extremely focused and solid.The textures were generally warm and creamy.

In warm vintages the levels of malic acids tend to be less followed by lower levels of lactic acids. You would now think the overall acidity would suffer. Well this plays out in a strange way, the tartaric acid is allowed to thrive due to the lack of lactic acid activity, making the wines that are lower in acidity, fresh, vibrant, and full of energy, as found in many of my tasting notes.

To sum up: the acidity levels are lower in this vintage BUT the wines still bear the character of poignant acidity.

Usually, it is customary to compare one vintage with another or a mix of two previous editions.

I cannot, hand on heart, perform this task with the Brunello 2020. Some parts of the regions wines can, at a stretch, have some link to the Brunello 2015. But I must say I think this vintage is unique, mainly because the wines produced do not fall into their usual comparison.

It took plenty of aeration to ‘open up’ this beauty. Elegant and super refined, but extremely inward looking, built to evolve for decades. Even now it has endless complexity. So precise and polished to the end. Patience is required before full character is revealed.
