Recently, I was graciously invited to a vertical tasting of Vigna Trecci Rosso Toscana IGT in Montepulciano followed by a lavish lunch at Osteria Porta di Bacco. Both the winery and the restaurant are under the ownership and meticulous management of my good friend Andrea Sorlini Bifolchi.

Vigna Trecci Rosso Toscana IGT is a blend of red and white grapes, included within some: Prugnolo Gentile, Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo, Colorino, Trebbiano and Malvasia. The result is an elegant, complex wine with nuances of cherry, raspberry, earthy notes, light spice and tobacco. A very important factor in connection with this wine is the winemaker, none other than the highly acclaimed Stefano Amerighi.

Vigna Trecci 2020Â (from Magnum)
Bright ruby red in colour with purple reflections. Aeration needed to disperse herbaceous notes, once completed a delicate expression of spring florals and ripe berry fruits ensue. Very Burgundian in its engagement, it just tip toes across the palate, so delicate and yet leaves a lasting impression.Tannins have dissolved into the wine. Acidity still showing a pulse. Lingers on the finish.
Points 94 TW

Vigna Trecci 2023
Intense ruby red in colour with purple rim.Vegetal on the nose, showing youthful character. Blackberry, dewberry, white smoke, blond sweet tobacco, dark chocolate and damp earth. On the palate: lively and fresh, full of ripe fruit and energy. Surprisingly approachable for a young wine in a difficult vintage. Plenty of clever work in the cellar, could be the answer.
Points 92-93 TW

Vigna Trecci 2024Â (from barrel)
Developing ruby red in colour, very translucent with bright purple undertones. Forward and lifted aromas of violet, bluebell and lavender florals. Dark berry fruits, liquorice, balsamic notes and mild spice. Compact, fruity, fresh, lively and well balanced considering its youth.
Points 91-93 TW
Vigna Trecci 2024 (from barrel with longer skin contact)
Colour still in development, this version comes across as bright purple as opposed to a red format. On the nose a touch vegetal, needs plenty of aeration, very little in aromatic profile, a hobbledehoy of a wine. Tannins tending to dry the palate at this stage. Points not given as this wine has yet a long runway to travel.

Following a fascinating tasting, lunch followed. I hardly ever talk about restaurants or food but I will make an exception in this case, because the food, service and the wines were exceptional. My sincere thanks to my friend Andrea who is a very attentive and generous host and a great restauranteur…
- Tartare of Scottish beef served with White truffle.
- Stuffed Ballotine of chicken with pistachio with a medley of vegetables Giardiniera.
- Tajarin 30 tuorli, served with fresh white truffle.
N.B. Tajarin is a very special Piedmontese hand made, deep yellow, thin cut "tagliolini like" pasta, made using 30 egg yokes per kilo of flour.
- Roast Pigeon with pan roasted seasonal vegetables.
- Home made ice cream made with extra virgin olive oil served on a dry chocolate crumble with a red berry coulis.

Some notes on the above wines:

Stella di Campalto Cielo 2018
Medium ruby red in colour. Lifted aromatic profile consisting of red blossom florals, black and red berry fruits, balsam, liquorice, damp forest floor, with crushed violet petals. Sweet humus notes. Elegant and sophisticated on entry, just coats the palate, wave after wave of ripe black berry fruits tantalise the imbiber, has the textural depth of the Mariana Trench. Secondary notes of cherry and savoury nuances. Loiters on the close.

Vino Nobile di Montepulciano
Giuseppe Fanetti 1990
Medium garnet red in colour. Aromatics still alive and pulsing, dark purple and dark blue florals, liquorice, roasted herb notes, tobacco. Blackcurrant, dried fig, clove and plum. On the palate: still fresh and vibrant (even after 35 years). Solid fruit core surrounded by pitch perfect tannin structure. Intense, Linear. Compact. Epic on the finish. Impressive.
